You’ll see Joans’ tips for free motion quilting the fun, easy way! Check out her tips on mitered corners, piping inside of binding, Victorian and Cottage binding and other unique trims! Joan will also talk about starting a business with your quilting!

Joan Friedrich Instructor

Joan is an avid and longtime sewer, bringing many years of experience to Baby Lock. She is an experienced quilter and loves to design dimensional and pictorial quilts. Working with a sewing machine retailer, and teaching quilting classes and workshops, Joan has taught students with all levels of experience. She is a member of the local quilter’s guild, and serves as the guild’s newsletter editor. In addition to her love of quilting, she also sews beautiful heirloom pieces, and enjoys creating home dec items. Joan resides in northern Alabama, with her husband on a large ranch, along with her growing collection of fabrics and sewing machines. Now traveling, she enthusiastically conveys her love and expertise of sewing, while conducting programs for Baby Lock.

When you learn how to sew, you are acquiring a talent that will serve you throughout your life and bring you hours of fun and enjoyment. Why not sign up for a sewing class? We offer lots of classes and are eager to help you make use of all of your sewing potential!

If you have ever looked at the work of the experienced seamstress, you may be daunted. Don’t be! They all started at one point, and they gained their skill by years of practice and lots of instruction. Here’s a secret. Sewing is easy! While the finished project may look complicated, it is simply made up of lots of small, easy steps. When you sign up for a sewing class, your teacher will help explain each of these little steps, show you how easy they are, and let you practice until you perfect them!

We love sewing and we love sharing our passion. We want to give you just what you need, whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine in your life and don’t even really sew on buttons, or whether you are an advanced seamstress and want to increase your skill. We meet you right at your level. If you are the greenest beginner out there, don’t be frightened by the complicated world of sewing gadgets and complicated patterns. We’ll take you step by step, teaching you how to use a machine. In no time, you’ll be able understand and follow any sewing pattern, from cutting it out to the final stitches. Don’t be afraid that you’ll be overwhelmed by all the new things you learn. Our goal is to help you gain these skills, so we go at your pace, giving you plenty of practice time so that you can master each technique and feel like a professional.

As always, our love of sewing goes hand in hand with our desire for you to become the proficient seamstress you dream of. We meet you on your level and match our classes to your interest, helping you gain skills in areas that you care about and help you create projects that you love. Our classes are driven by our passion for sewing and desire to challenge you without being overwhelming. We have so much fun creating things from fabric and can’t wait to share the fun with you!
